ARTIST STATEMENT

Bookending the Body came from an initial exploration into representations of the human figure. There is a malleability and plasticity to the body that I am fascinated with. As an artist and athlete, I was interested in the plasticity and malleability of my own body. We all breathe within our own signifiers of place, time and experience which slowly evolves often unnoticeably and yet also certainly.

My artistic approach is one of a direct relationship to the body and the materiality with which I create. The body geography that I explore in my sculptural and two dimensional work deals with tapping into and weaving influences from materiality and physical experience with the body and consciousness. We see our bodies’ age, grow and shrink, lengthen, expand and retract.

In a reality where self-observation and the depiction of the female body is often painted for women as a negative effect of the media or a sexual morsel for visual consumption, I am interested in the realization of works that sees this visual reflection of physicality and malleability as a natural quality that is shared by many other activated materials. The human body speaks; its height and limbs and cantor all defining and redefining the relationship it has to its reality. And sometimes they can speak together.
